More Than Art: The Best Events Happening at the DIA This Summer

The Detroit Institute of Arts always features world class art throughout the year, but this summer they also have numerous exciting exhibits and events taking place. Whether it’s examining the costumes of a beloved sci-fi saga, remembering an iconic sports team, or seeing the city through a unique lens, there’s always something to see at the DIA. Here are five exhibits or events that we think you and your family should check out this summer.

“Star Wars” and the Power of Costume (Now-9/30)

The DIA’s “Star Wars” and the Power of the Costume takes guests to a galaxy far, far away. Along with viewing over 60 original costumes from the saga, fans will be able to get an inside look at the captivating process of making some of the most unique costumes in cinema history. Sci-Fi Summer (Now-8/31)

Coinciding with their exciting “Star Wars” exhibit, the DIA will be showcasing science-fiction films all summer long at the Detroit Film Theatre. Sci-fi fans will be able to experience obscure films such as “First Men in the Moon” and “This Island Earth,” classic films such as “Planet of the Apes” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” and even modern hits like “Black Panther” and “District 9.”

Play Ball! Baseball at the DIA (Now-9/16)

Celebrate the great American pastime this summer at the DIA’s Play Ball! exhibit running through September 16. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of Detroit’s 1968 World Series victory with collectibles, baseball cards, and extraordinary memorabilia. Items from the E. Powell Miller Collection and the DIA will come together for a one of a kind exhibit that is a must visit for any baseball fan.

Gregory Porter: Don’t Forget Your Music (6/14)

Chronicling the Grammy Award-winning jazz artist, “Don’t Forget Your Music” is an inside look at Gregory Porter’s life. Featuring interviews with the American jazz icon’s family and artistic collaborators, the film offers a rare glimpse into what it takes to be an award-winning musician. The film will screen at the Detroit Film Theatre in partnership with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Tickets and more information on the event can be found here.

Lost & Found (starting 8/25)

Coming in late August, the DIA’s newest exhibit, Lost & Found, showcases everyday life, architecture, and portraits of Detroit in the 1970s. The exhibit will feature over 500 rare vernacular photographs that will highlight Detroit from a different point of view.
